Although we prided ourselves with refined design and reproductions of important works with interesting proveniences, it was the color finishes that sold the product
For Decorative GRC to develop beyond where it had, we had to take the perception of the composite away from being simply cement. It was the decorative finishes we developed that helped us redefine GRC as not simply cement based.
GRC with its very high Portland cement content 50% as compared to Ordinary concrete less than 10% means GRC is a rich Canvas for reactive acid stains that develop their color as a reaction with the lime in the cement.
Actually what we developed is not an acid stain as there is no acid in it. 15 years ago Acid stains where hard to come by! It was in the early years of the Art foundry that I observed color staining on the concrete floor in the work areas where we patinated Bronze sculptures that gave me the chemistry set I needed to develop our color finishes.
I had to learn how to make my own acid stains and I am glad I did as we have way more freedom than you can get with commercial stains.
The art of chemical staining is still in its infancy and represents one of the most exciting future directions for Decorative GRC with almost unlimited finishes yet to be developed
